The New Mass Prayers

Why is the Catholic Church changingthe prayers of the Mass? What differencewill these new words make? On November27, 2011, Catholics will begin praying with the new missal. The new translation of the Roman Missal hasgenerated much interest and many questions. On Sunday, October 23, 2011, from 1:30-3:30pm, Linwood Spiritual Center willpresent “Are You Ready for the New Mass Prayers?” Fr. Tom Scirghi, SJ, will lead a discussionof the new missal with its blend of the old and the new, and how it may reviveworship. The cost for this program is $15.00

Thomas Scirghi, SJ, is Professor ofSacramental Theology at Fordham University. He has presented workshops on the new missal across the country as wellas in Asia and Africa. Tom is a longtimefriend and regular visitor to Linwood.

Linwood Spiritual Center OffersSpirituality for Women Program

On Monday evenings from 7:00-9:00P.M., Linwood Spiritual Center will offer Spiritualityfor Women. Beginning on October 17and ending on November 14, this series will be facilitated by Maureen Steeley, S.U. andbased on the book Prayer by JoyceRupp. The fee for the program is $50,plus the cost of the book.

In her book, Rupp inspires us not only totalk to God but to listen to the “still, small voice of God” within us.The longer we pray, the more we realize prayer is bigger than weare, more expansive and deeper. Join the group as it plumbs Rupp’s book,sharing stories and struggles and, perhaps, find each other already in theheart of prayer.

Maureen Steeley,SU, is the Director of Linwood Spiritual Center. Inthis role, she initiates programs for the Center and interfaces with guestpresenters. She especially enjoys the ministry of spiritual direction andretreat ministry as well as facilitating various groups of men and women,helping them to find God in their lives.

Behind the Scenes with Chef Andrew Jenners

If you have ever been to Linwood, you know that the food here is not only plentiful, but well-prepared, nutritious and really, really good. That responsibility lies with Chef Andrew Jenners, a graduate of Johnson and Wales, who agreed to be interviewed for this article. Although he was a bit reticent to talk about his talents, we got him to share some of his thoughts with us….

LC: What made you want to become a chef?

Chef: My mother was a big influence on me. I remember making Christmas cookies and helping her in the kitchen. She’s Italian and was always doing something in the kitchen.

LC: So Andrew, What brought you to Linwood?

Chef: I needed a job and thought Linwood sounded like an interesting place. I was a vegetarian at the time and felt that a spiritual center might be a good match. I kind of think of myself as a personal chef or a cook in somebody’s home. And I really like the hours. I don’t like to work nights any more.

LC: What inspires you?

Chef: I like being creative and crafting new dishes. I love making desserts. I have several gardens so I try to use seasonal ingredients.

LC: Where can we find you on your day off?

Chef: I enjoy doing a lot of different things. I like drumming and playing percussion. I love to ski, if I weren’t a chef, I’d probably be a ski instructor. (We also found out Andrew has a black belt in karate and was a member of the U.S. Junior Karate Team.)

LC: What is your favorite local restaurant?

Chef: I don’t go out a lot, because I don’t care to spend a lot of money on something that I know I can make just as well. But for special occasions, I like The Red Onion in Saugerties.

LC: Name three people you would like to share a meal with, past or present.

Chef: That’s a hard one. I don’t really have a favorite chef. I don’t know that I would want to eat with my favorite author. I guess I’d have to say Thomas Jefferson, because he was a real renaissance man who did a lot of things and was really into food. I think I’m a little bit like him. Also John Burroughs because I’m a nature guy and probably Martin Luther King.

Linwood Spiritual Center Opens 2011-12 Season

Sr. Maureen Steeley, S.U., Director of the Linwood Spiritual Center, announced the opening of the Center on September 15 for the 2011-2012 seasons. Linwood offers spiritual retreats that include extended, directed and guided retreats for both men and women and programs in human development. In addition, there are a host of single day and evening programs. Extended retreats include those based on Ignatian spirituality, yoga and quilting, twelve-step spirituality, and retreats centered around particular times of year including Advent, Lent, and Holy Week. Some of the single day and evening program offerings are Spiritual Spa Day for Women, Senior Citizens Afternoons of Recollections, The Labyrinth: An Ancient Tool for Modern Times, and Lectio and Lunch at Linwood. As well as the Center’s programming, the facilities may also be used for meeting, conference and event space.

Sr. Maureen describes the atmosphere of Linwood as she quotes the poet Mary Oliver saying, “ ‘…the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak.’ It doesn’t have to be grand thoughts. It could be a moment of elusive quiet in chapel, the sound of a wind chime or a simple blade of grass beckoning us to come closer. The gate is always open…..”

If you haven't been to Linwood Spiritual Center, you really should make a point of coming to visit, whether for a retreat, an overnight of spiritual rejuvenation, or just a walk in the country. Not only is the view spectacular, the grounds are pristine, immaculately kept, the gardens abound. It is truly heaven on earth.
